Puducherry, Sept 1 (PTI) The Joint Agitation Committee of various trade unions here today urged the Puducherry Government to initiate immediate steps to get adequate funds from the Centre's Technology Upgradation scheme to modernise the three major textile mills here. AITUC local unit Secretary and Convenor of the committee V.S.Abishegam told reporters that a 12-member delegation of the leaders of different trade unions had met the Prime Minister and also Union Textiles Minister in Delhi last week presented memorandums seeking sanction of around Rs 500 crores for modernisation of AFT Mills, Sri Bharathi Mills and the Swadeshi Cotton Textile mills. These decades old mills had been a major source of livelihood, but now were not given proper attention to tap their full potential. The past glory of these mills should be regained, he said. He said Union Minister V.Narayanasamy should also intervene and use his good offices to tone up the mills. If there was delay in taking action the trade unions would launch a series of agitations till the goal was achieved, he said.
