The 11th Handloom Day was recently organised in Manipur by Imphal Handlooms Promotion Council. During the keynote address, Mr. Salam Chingtam Luwang, Secretary Handlooms Promotion Council stated that the weavers must receive respect from the society and there should be a separate department for handlooms to promote it.

Moreover, he also said that separate awards should be instituted for the sector to encourage weavers as handloom industry plays an imperative role in preserving state*s culture. The state can be economically stronger by producing a number of handloom products.

Nearly half of the country*s handloom products are manufactured in North East states, said Mr. Moirangthem Rajen, OSD Handloom of Commerce and Industries Department while speaking as a Chief Guest.

There is a need to work co-operatively with every section of the society to promote handloom products as handloom manufacturing is not being considered as a major commercial activity.
