Textiles, apparels, footwear, to be recycled in New York

New York city is all set to introduce one of the largest textile recycling programs in the city, from the month of September, with an objective to make donation of apparels as simple as throwing them away.

As per the statistics of the Environmental Protection Agency, each American pitches around 10 pounds of socks, shirts, jeans and sheets per year. In New York, around 190,000 tons of textiles were thrown away in the year 2008.

Under the projected program, 50 collection bins would be placed in high traffic areas. A 10-15 year contract with a non-profit company, to be responsible for these bins, is being bided by the city. Goodwill Industries International is among the list of firms, which is bidding on the contract.

As per the Director of the Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling in New York, Robert Lange, throwing apparels away is easier than recycling those. All used and old, stinky sneakers and torn garments or sheets can not always be recycled.

But, these garments and sheets can be recycled through several ways. This program of recycling apparels could turn into a nationwide moment, if this campaign sees success, said officials.

This program would generate jobs along with clearing some area in the landfills of the nation, said Co-Director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance based in Washington, DC, Brenda Platt.

She estimated that, the textile industry generates 85 times more jobs than landfills, after profiling 20 textile recycling companies.
