Secretary of the Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Ministry, P Sivagnanasothy, said that, government is intending to raise the economic growth in the rural sector from 5-6 percent to 8-10 percent, by developing handicraft villages manufacturing high quality goods in varied parts of the nation.
While addressing a gathering of over 500 craftsmen and women from different parts of the nation at Mihilaka Medura, BMICH, Sivagnanasothy averred that, by updating capacity building via workshops like these, craftsmen will receive great help in improving the quality of their goods and life, as well.
National Design Centre along with National Craft Centre organizes training programs across 132 training centres, which enhances craftsmen��s skills and also improves the quality of the employee workforce of the country.
The ministry has already begun its strategic planning to rope in market-based environmental friendly goods to the world, informed Sivagnanasothy. Post its 30-year terrorist war, Deputy Minister, Dissanayaka informed that, the country is now enjoying freedom and it has turned in to a platform for everyone to make the best use of their available skills for the benefit of people and national economy.
Dissanayaka further added that, an attitude changed was required and the domestic goods should now be valued and encouraged. More over, it was time to discard plastics and get closer to eco-friendly creative handicrafts.
Workshop, Yovun Dethata Diriyak, was set up merely for 400 people, but there were over 500 craftsmen and women at the location to learn new skills from the National Design Centre, including people from Jaffna and Anuradhapura visited the workshop.
