Two textile firms fined Tk 2.2 mn for river pollution

Fine of Tk 2.2 million has been levied on two knitting and dyeing industries in Fatullah, Narayanganj, for violating the environment laws and polluting the Shitalakhya River.

These industries have been operating since years, without any effluent treatment plant (ETP), hence, violating environmental rules.

A team led by Muhammed Munir Chowdhury, Director of Operation Prevent Environment Crime, wing of the Department of Environment (DoE) carried out a drive at the Rahman Hosiery Dyeing and Finishing Mills in Kayempur and Fakir Knitwear Ltd at Kutub Ail both situated in Fatullah.

Both these firms were found discharging toxic liquid waste in to the nearby Wapda canal, which ultimately flows to the Shitalakhya.

The team has asked these industries to set up ETP within the next three months, failing which their power and gas connections will be disconnected. These industry owners have, as of now, assured that ETP would be set up in the given time period.
