SIALKOT (May 22 2010): Director National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Amir Mohyuddin has said a master plan will be prepared for developing modern "Sialkot Tanneries Zone" near Sialkot. Talking to Business Recorder on Friday he said that feasibility of the project would be prepared with the consultation of Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and stakeholders engaged with leather sector.
All aspects and requirements would be covered in the master plan of the proposed Sialkot Tanneries Zone, he added. The Director further stated that under the plan special attention would be paid on preventive and mitigation measures as well as undertaking other activities in tanneries zone.
The business community of Sialkot had approached NDMA for obtaining necessary assistance and co-operation for developing Sialkot Tanneries Zone project on modern and scientific lines and would be the first of its kind project in the country which would be assisted by NDMA, he said. He further stated tanners have planned to relocate the tanneries and establish waste water treatment plant for which there was a need of technical assistance adding that the initiative would help in overcoming the hazards and would lead to sustainable industrial growth in the area.
President SCCI, Muhammad Ishaq Butt said NDMA and UNDP have agreed to provide technical assistance and development plan for setting up tanneries Zone in Sialkot to reduce the risk of disasters and industrial hazards relating to leather sector. The Director NDMA has also assured to provide technical feasibility for installation of Effluent Treatment Plant in Sialkot Tanneries Zone to conserve environment, water and other natural resources, Butt added.
