First jobs go at carpet factory

Updated: 2010-10-4 Source: http://www.abc.net.au

The administrators of a troubled Tasmanian carpet-maker have announced the first redundancies at its Devonport factory.

The news was broken today to 25 full-time and two casual workers at Tascot Templeton.

The administrators, Paul Cook and Associates, say the workers will be paid their outstanding wages but they have lodged an application to have their entitlements funded under a federal government scheme.

The high-quality carpet weaver went into voluntary administration last week due to a lack of orders, threatening the jobs of its 150 employees.

Mark Edwards from the Textile Clothing and Footwear Union says today's redundancies were unexpected.

"They were at work today, there was a list of names that was handed to the union delegate and then the people were advised that they would be made redundant as of today.

"The message I got was they had no work for these people so they have laid them off," said Mr Edwards.

"I have had one brief conversation with the administrators and what we are now trying to do is get in to place the training package and information for these people as quick as we can," he said.

The administrators did not want to comment on the announcement.

They will hold a creditors meeting in Devonport on Tuesday and expect to make further announcements after that.
